The course deals mainly with numerical methods for approximate solutions to systems of linear algebraic equations and the problem of calculating eigenvalues and eigenvectors of matrices. In real-world problems, where the problem size is often very large and the matrix is sparse, the direct methods become unsuitable because the storage requirements and computational volume are too high. Iterative methods play an important role in solving such problems.
